About Portrait with Keys: The City of...
In Portrait with Keys, acclaimed South African writer Ivan Vladislavic turns his attention to Johannesburg, the city he calls home. Structured as a series of short, interlinked vignettes, the book uses the motif of keys—house keys, car keys, gate keys—to unlock meditations on security, belonging, and the fragmented nature of urban life. Vladislavic wanders through neighborhoods, observing the architecture of fear in gated communities, the remnants of apartheid-era planning, and the vibrant improvisations of street life. His prose is precise and evocative, moving seamlessly between personal memory and public history. Photographs and reflections on art and literature enrich the text, creating a collage-like portrait of a city in flux. Neither conventional memoir nor straightforward travelogue, this genre-bending work invites readers to see Johannesburg—and perhaps all cities—anew, through the small, telling details of everyday existence.
Who should read Portrait with Keys: The City of...?
This book is ideal for readers of literary nonfiction and the personal essay, especially those drawn to experimental forms. Students and scholars of urban studies, architecture, and South African history will find rich material on Johannesburg's social geography. Sebald, Teju Cole, or Rebecca Solnit—who blend memoir, observation, and cultural criticism—will discover a kindred spirit. Anyone interested in the poetics of everyday life and the hidden stories of objects will be captivated.

Frequently asked questions

It is neither strictly; it blends memoir, essay, and urban observation. Vladislavic describes it as a 'book of scenes' rather than a novel or conventional memoir.
Do I need to know Johannesburg to appreciate the book?
No, but some familiarity with South African history helps. Vladislavic's evocative prose makes the city vivid even for newcomers, though the context enriches the reading.
Are there photographs in the book?
The text references photographs and includes some, but the extent varies by edition. They are integrated as part of the narrative's meditation on seeing and memory.
What is the significance of the title?
The title refers to a photograph of a boy with keys, and more broadly to the book's motif: keys as symbols of access, security, memory, and the boundaries of urban life.
Is this book suitable for a book club?
Yes, its themes of urban anxiety, memory, and belonging spark rich discussion. The vignette structure allows for varied entry points, though some members may prefer a more linear narrative.
